Since taking early retirement from my full time post at the University of Leeds in March 2001 I have continued to work part-time as a 'software consultant'. In the main this has been a continuation of some of the work I was involved in at the University.

I was employed in the Computer Based Learning Unit the University of Leeds for over thirty years, first as a research assistant and finally as Principal Research Fellow. During these years I learned to program in several languages, became heavily involved in several major programmes funded by the UK Government and also the European Union, and (in my later years) in the development of subject-specific multimedia software for learning, some of which has been used internationally.

The Computer Based Learning Unit no longer exists, having, in some ways, outlived the reasons for which it was original set up in 1969, though many who have spent time with it either as students or staff continue to work in the field around the world. I have a small collection of documents that may illuminate the thirty-odd years of the CBLU's existence.

At that time, anything that involved computers and teaching or learning was (by definition) research. These days the use of computers at all levels of education is assumed, though the value of what is done may be questioned.

For a few years after I retured from my full-time post I acted as a part-time consultant to the Assessment and Evaluation Unit at the University of Leeds working on such projects as World Class Tests and contributing to research related to what is becoming known as e-assessment. This has now come to an end.

I have also maintained a link with Media Innovations Limited, a spin-off company part-owned by the University of Leeds which among other things markets Introduction to Textiles. I played a major part in the developent of this major piece of multimedia instructional software which has now been in use for more than 10 years and only just about to be superseded.

In the time that I now have for other pursuits. I design and maintain a few web sites (mainly for charitable organisations) though commercial work (if offered) might be taken on. I have taken my lifelong interest in photography into the digital era using Canon 10D and A80 cameras. I have a web-site where you can browse selected digital images (and purchase them).
